Operators and Things: The Inner Life of a Schizophrenic

Author: Barbara, Pseud. O'Brien

A forgotten classic
This book "reached out" to me from a disheveled rack of paperbacks in Gatwick Airport around 1976, a time when I was going through my own re-visioning of the world, what has later come to be called a "spiritual emergency", and it became a healing influence for me, bridging my own paranoid (para = "beside" + noia = "mind") fear-ridden thinking with a possibility of a positive paranoia. I dare say this book would continue to resonate with many, were it still in print.

a classic in need of a reprinting
Like the others who have written reviews here, I read this
book over half a lifetime ago, and because it so haunted me
with its insights into the many pieces of the mind, every few
years I try to find another copy.

Remember the metaphore of consciousness as an island in the ocean
of the subconscious, and ideas as the little bits of driftwood
that get washed up by the waves, for us to do with as we can?

Very memorable
I have been searching for a copy of this book for many years, to no avail, having read it as a young teenager about 40 years ago. The memory of this book has stayed with me to this day as one of the most remarkable books I've read, and I've read many! It's a shame it appears to be virtually unavailable. I was surprised to read the other customer reviews and to discover that there are others with a story similar to mine, who likewise read this book many years ago and remembered it. The picture it gives of one woman's delusional but somehow fascinating and strangely logical world is powerful, haunting, and deeply affecting. You'll never look at Greyhound buses the same way again!

Chicken Flavored Ramen for the Soul

Great Humor
These guys must have lived college life to it's fullest. I read the book from cover to cover in one night, only putting it down to wipe the tears shed from laughing so hard! The book totally captures most of what all of us experienced at some point during that 4 year undergrad journey- wish I could have had a beer with Ace and Chuck a time or two; or did I? Hmmm!!!

Well, it's true.
Some people wonder if the stories in this book really happened. Well, they did. I know these clowns, and I can attest to the fact every thing happened. I know it may be unbelievable, but these boneheads are all unbelievable, even when you saw it happen LIVE. You can buy this book or not - it is your call. Neither Ace nor Chuck will enter the poor house if you decide to buy "The Red Tent" instead. But you WILL be missing out on perhaps the funniest book ever.

Funny Stuff
I checked into this book because it was recommended to me by a friend of mine. I bought it to read on a long car ride. Even with all the distractions of reading in a car, I finished the book in about 6 hours because I could not put it down! The opening is a riot, and the glossary is probably the best part of the book. I think the funniest chapter is the one called "Cabin Trip" or something like that. I don't want to ruin the story, but it's hard to believe it really happened. This book really will make you laugh, even if it isn't Pullitzer-worthy.

Falling for a Dancer

A life changed forever
Have you ever wondered what life would have been like if a certain event in your life had never occured? To read this novel is to read about the life of some one like that. If the bus had never broken down Elizabeth(Beth) would never have met George and her life wouldn't have been changed for the worse. It is the 1930's and Beth is living in Cork with her parents. She is after arriving home from a trip to Dublin with her friend Ida, but she has a deep secret that no one must know - she is pregnent and has only two choices- leave home and move into a home run by the nuns for unwed mothers or to marry... After a horrifying visit to the nun-run home Beth solomly decides to marry. The match is made for her, she is to wed a resently bereaved man named Neeley Scollard. After a quiet ceremony Beth is brought home- not to Cork but to her new home in Beara on the west most tip of Dingle where she is met by her new daughters.Beth has a son whom she calls Francey. Straight away it is obvious that Neeley is a strict man- all of his family fear him. Neeley's cousin Mossie is a decent type of person but Neeley maintains that Mossie is a land-grabber and that he and his family are to have nothing to do with him. After a dance Neeley losses his temper and hurts Francey, that night while Beth is in Cork hospital with Francey, Neeley dies. Everyone suspects that young Danny Mc Carthy has murdered him- noboby knows. After many years of heart ache and turmoil Beth wants to leave Beara but finds it too hard to leave. Mossie trys to win her heart but ............. You don't think that I'm going to tell you the whole story? If I did where's the point in reading the book? Deirdre Purcell is the best in a new type of writer. She is able to pull you into the story and into the lives the characters. I really enjoyed this book- I've read it God knows how many times. I have found that I hate to put this book down when I'm reading it. If you want to read more about the Scollard family, the continuation book is called Francey and it lets us know what happened the only boy and the rset of his clann (family for those of you that don't speak Irish). Happy reading- let me know if you read the book and enjoyed it or even if you hated it- I might be able to suggest more books for you. Slan o mise !! (Good bye from me !!

want reality of romance
I saw the movie and fell for Liam Cunningham and am now looking for my Mossie Sheehan. I am not much for the romantical farce normally, but this one caught my eye and heart. I am also looking for a copy of the movie.

Absolutely Brilliant!
From beginning to end, I found this book truly enthralling. I absolutely adored it. I could not at all put it down. The story is in depth and right at the heart of conflicts of emotions. The characters are lovable and realistic. It is full of heart ache, joy, love, romance, modern dilemas and sex. What else does one need from a book?

My advice to any hopeless romantic is to read this book, and maybe even then, buy the video. Even if you have already seen the video, it is worth reading the book. The plot is a lot thicker and more enjoyable!

must for graphic designers and Xmas giftgiving!
I saw this book at a small party and immediately orderd six copies. Christmas gifts for my folks and a hard-to-shop-for couple. The tins and packages are beautifully shot and reproduced. As a designer I actually am finding it to be a resource for great retro design and color combinations. There you have it... some really diverse reasons to purchase this wonderful book!!!

Historical, colorful, informative, and fun to read!!!
Interesting to find that this is the first book of its kind on the history of condoms and their packaging. Not only does it contain information the average person would never have guessed, it is useful to those into the history of graphic design. The tins are miniatue works of art in themselves, regardless of what they contained! The down to earth style of the text is easy on the reader as well. All in all a great bargain - the hardcover of the book in itself is worth the price of admission!

This is the best & only source for condom container prices!
I could not believe the quality of this hardback book. Many pricing guide books for collectibles are printed on newsprint, and they are paperback as well. This book is top class all the way! I hope these guys keep coming up with revised additions, as new and yet undiscovered condom tins and boxes surface. Bravo!!!

The SIDS Survival Guide: Information and Comfort for Grieving Family and Friends and Professionals Who Seek to Help Them

A Life Saver
The SIDS Survival Guide was my beacon of light during the darkest part of my life. My son, Dominic, passed away from SIDS on April 10, 2001, at only 4 1/2 months young. I began to reach out and search for all the information I could find on SIDS, drinking it all in by the bucket. A few months after he died, I found "The SIDS Survival Guide", and am so incredibly thankful. There was so much information, so many stories so like my own. I shed many tears while reading it for the first time, and even now, when I go back to read sections, I still cry. I am now expecting our second child in June 2002, and am scared to death. But knowing that I am informed about SIDS is somewhat of a comfort to me; in a way, I am as prepared as I can ever be. I would recommend this book to anyone expecting a child, who has a young baby, or knows someone who is or does.

Sanity check
My husband and I lost our son to SIDS in September of 2000. Our souls have been torn. The grieving process over his death has been draining. I recall little over the past 4+ months since his death. The one thing I do recall is thinking I was going crazy. I had wished their was another SIDS survivor I could speak with. Someone who could possibly relate to what my husband and I were going through. Someone who could understand our emotions. I searched under the keyword SIDS and found this book. I have not read the book in its entirety. I have read the sections I have needed at the particular times in my grieving. This book has helped me confirm that I am not going crazy. What I am feeling, though very personal, is normal. I feel this book is a neccesity for any parent who has to suffer this terrible tragedy. I have placed an order of these books in my babies memory to send to my state SIDS Coordinator in hopes that other parents may find comfort in its contents. Thank you Joani and Robin.

Very good source of information about SIDS
This book is one of the best for SIDS information

Excellent
I loved the book. Once I finally started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I even caught myself crying in parts of it while I was on a plane. I had to make sure no body saw me. I would recommend the book to all my friends and family.

...#2 in the trilogy is where?
Heather, this book was absolutely fantastic. I am looking for a Lifetime movie to be made. Your description took me right there.. Farin's beauty, Jordan's chivalry, Chris' absolute narcissism and Jameson's power was so detailed and visible. I really really really want to read the 2nd of this trilogy, oh and the third one. I feel like I am a part of it and I know these people. The emotions that you bring out in the reader are very powerful. I thank you very much for this book and look forward to some more..

The Personal Trainer's Handbook

Author: Teri S. O'Brien

A must for those starting in the business
The first part of the book is pretty simple in its concept. Mostly it gives you ideas on interaction with clients. Even with issues I already knew it was nice to have the reassurance. The best part of the book from was the EXERCISE section. It gives concise and easy to follow instructions on many exercises and they are broken down by body parts. What makes this especially valuable is that she give you reminders to tell your client plus things to watch out for as a trainer for each exercise. I only wish she had added more of this in the book. I practically scanned this whole section and uploaded it into my Palm Pilot for quick access at the gym ***That may be an idea for you Teri for future products**Also in the back are several standard forms such as a medical release.

Read this and live it, or she'll cuff ya!!
I found three good reasons to read this book. 1. It's jam packed and filled to the brim with practical knowledge about how to become fit and/or a fitness trainer. 2.It discusses aspects of training yourself or others that most people never consider, such as: When to say when,Trainer ethics and credibility, and the importance of functional fitness. 3. Teri writes like she talks which means the book is more fun to read than most others. Buy it.

It's your One Stop Shopping Center for fitness know how.

?: Question Book

Authors: Tim O'Brien and Cliff Carle
Average review score:

I thought it would be about Vietnam, am I dumb!
Does a writer who shares the same name as a famous guy who writes about his years in 'Nam sell as many books?? That's one question I think I know the answer to!

Hilarious!!
This book is filled with 169 off-the-wall, hilarious, zany questions. Tim O'Brien is truly a gifted comic. Who else could have thought of such questions as:

If white wine goes with fish, do white grapes go with sushi?

Do Roman paramedics refer to IVs as "4's" ?

Does distressed leather come from very tense cows?

These, and the other 166 questions in this book are side-splittingly funny. If you like off-the-wall humor, you'll love this book.

A masterpiece
Tolstoy -- step aside.

Joyce -- suck my toe.

Alright, fine, that's it...I admit, I'm the writer. But alas, I think this some cool stuff. Dig it. Love it. Leave it. Amen.

A Way of Life, Like Any Other
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (January, 1978)
Author: Darcy. O'Brien
Average review score:

Amazing Feat of Compression and Eloquence
The writing here is so filled with generosity, compassion, and dark humor -- it's a most charming view of life. A coming-of-age novel about a boy who grows up in post-WW II Hollywood, shuffling between unforgettable, screwed-up parents. There's not a dead sentence here. It's short, but O'Brien captures it all. Completely re-readable. Keep it by your bedside to inspire and forgive your own life when you feel like it's trying to beat you down.

A Fantastic Novel
This is a MUST. Indeed it is Caulden Houlfield in Hollywood. If you like Catcher in the Rye, most likely you will love this book. It really is a great story with some great humor.

A Way of Life
Darcy O'Brien combines the surreal humor of Flann O'Brien and the limpid prose of the young James Joyce and somehow writes a coming of age book which transcends both mentors in some ways. Lean, cool, dry, witty, but in the end, mysteriously poignant. Anthony Powell always argued that seen at close range all human beings, driven as they are at different speeds by the same furies, are equally extraordinary. O'Brien proves Powell's point, in prose reminscent of that master's early comic novels.
